6 Pro Life Practices
By: Kristen Moore
As Christians, we know that abortion is wrong; but what are we actively doing to combat it? There are so many opportunities for young people to get involved in the Pro-Life movement that is picking up momentum in this country and in the world. Here are just a few of those things:
1. Be Informed.
Abortion is a heavy subject to study; but its gruesome and evil nature is exactly why we oppose it and must work to abolish it. Spend some time to educate yourself on exactly what abortion is and its effects on women and society in general. Learn some statistics-they will blow your mind! Learn the talking points of the other side and how to properly and logically refute them. One of the most important things you can do to contribute to pro-life efforts is to be able to hold an intelligent, passionate conversation about the topic. That can only happen when you know your stuff. Here is just one resource to get you started: http://college.studentsforlife.org/why-should-you-care-about-abortion/
2. Be Connected.
Join up with other Pro-Life groups. There are tons of them! Here are just a few: Students for Life -- studentsforlife.org
National Right to Life – nrlc.org
Pro Life Action League – prolifeaction.org
You can join or form a club in your high school or college campus; or, get your local Bible club involved. By joining these pro-life groups, you can stay informed about various pro-life campaigns or events going on near you. You can also subscribe to email lists which will keep you informed of various ways you can donate your money, volunteer your time or contact elected officials when important bills are up for voting.
3. Be Vocal.
This generation has more resources at its disposal than any other generation before it. Each of you reading this article has the capability to reach hundreds if not thousands of people through the power of the internet. Use Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, etc., to promote your pro-life beliefs. If you can’t or don’t want to produce your own material, there is already plenty out there for you to share. A lot of people are ignorant about abortion so you can make an impact simply by sharing good information (emphasis on the word “good” – make sure you do your research).
4. Be Registered.
As soon as you are old enough, register to vote…and then VOTE! Vote pro-life in all levels of government! Even if you are not old enough to vote you can still contact your senators and representatives and tell them to vote for life on the Senate and House floor. You can attend rallies and be involved in political events that advance the pro-life agenda such as the annual March for Life.
5. Be Compassionate.
If abortion were abolished tomorrow and every abortion clinic in the country were shut down it would be a wonderful victory – however there would be many scared, confused women who would feel helpless and not know where to turn. That is where compassion comes in. There are also many crisis pregnancy resource centers all over the United States that provide tremendous services for women who find themselves in an unplanned pregnancy and who do not perform abortions. Find one in your area and volunteer your time or donate money or resources to it. Call them and find out what items and services they need. Get your youth group or a school group involved. Often, these groups also have literature or even do talks at schools, colleges, community centers, etc., providing education and resources to young women to help them prevent unplanned pregnancies or to help them to continue attending and paying for school while pregnant and after giving birth. These types of life-affirming ministries and clinics need the support of churches and communities in order to serve these women and save unborn lives.
6. Be Prayerful.
God hates the shedding of innocent blood. We as the Church must be a voice for the voiceless. We must never cease to cry out to God on behalf of the millions of unborn children who have been slaughtered as well as the mothers who have been manipulated, lied to, and left hurting and confused. The effectual, fervent prayers of the righteous will accomplish more than all the protesting and political conversations in the world. Let us pray daily that the Lord will move in our nation and that he will use this generation to bring our country and our world back to the side of life.
In the past couple of years, incredible strides have been made in the Pro-Life movement. More pro-life legislation has been passed recently than in decades before. More and more young people are realizing the evils of abortion and are revolting against it. “There’s an army rising up.” Will you join the army and fight? I hope and pray that you will!
