The Truth About the Bible

By Mark Stacy

How can We Know The Bible Is True?

No doubt, whether you are in high school or college, you have encountered someone who doesn’t believe that the Bible is true. If you haven’t, just wait, you will. Be it friend, fellow student, or professor, inevitably there will be someone in your life bent on convincing you that the Bible isn’t true.

The two most important questions a person could ask are, “Is there a God?” and, “Has God spoken?” As Christians we believe that He has spoken, and that the Bible contains His words. We must understand the vital importance of holding fast to the Bible as truth, for only in the Bible will we find the words of God. Let’s look at the evidence that supports the validity of the Bible.

Internal Evidence.

Some would argue that the scriptures are historically unreliable, and that because of this we cannot trust their historical accounts. This claim is wholly unjustifiable when you look at the evidence. Consider this, there is more manuscript evidence for the Bible than all other works of antiquity combined. Six hundred forty-three manuscripts have been found of Homer’s Iliad, eight for Herodotus’ History, seven for Plato’s writings, and ten for Caesar’s Gallic Wars. The historical accuracy of the aforementioned writings is almost universally accepted; however, the number of manuscript findings for these works begins to pale when compared to the 5,366 Greek manuscripts of the New Testament alone. In short, if we cannot trust the New Testament as a legitimate work of history when it sets the standard for all others, what other work can be trusted?

The Bible was written over a span of fifteen hundred years, on three separate continents, by more than forty different authors from every walk of life (e.g., kings, musicians, philosophers, peasants, tax collectors, poets, etc.), yet each book is in perfect agreement. Themes such as the Fall of man, God’s Law, God’s Covenant with mankind, and the Redemption of man are found to be pivotal throughout the entirety of scripture. Critics of the Bible may point to scriptural differences, however, these “contradictions” have easily been understood and refuted in the light of the whole voice of scripture. This is possible only because each author had one source, God.

External Evidence.

Archeology helps confirm the historical claims of the Bible (e.g., excavations of Jericho, Sodom and Gomorrah, etc.). Modern advancements in science have helped to prove that the Bible was scientifically accurate well before its time with its claims that the earth is a sphere (Isaiah 40:22) and that it hangs on nothing (Job 26:7). These specific scriptures were written some 3,500 years ago, long before science was able to catch up. Another remarkable proof of the scientific advancement of the Bible is the protection of the Jews during the Black Plague. While millions were catching disease and dying, the Jews were relatively untouched due to their strict observance of the dietary and burial laws found in the Bible.

God’s fingerprint.

Finally, let me conclude with what I believe to be the most powerful evidence that the Bible is true. That evidence is you. That’s right, you are the most powerful evidence that the Bible is true. Human beings are unique in the world. We have personality, intelligence (the ability to reason and acquire knowledge), and morality. We laugh, we love, we hurt, we cry. We have an innate sense of justice and a need for companionship. We are rational and logical. Why? Evolution says that we are just a higher evolved animal species, but animals do not have the ability to reason that we have. Without the Bible these things are impossible to understand, it is the only book that is able to answer the human question. The Bible says that we are created “in the image of God” (Gen 1:26). Logicality, intelligence, and rationality are all inherent in God. The reason that we feel and are logical, intelligent, and rational is because we were created in the image of a God that possesses those same traits. There is a longing inside every human heart that can be cured only by God.

The truth of Bible has been confirmed time and again by archeology and science. The gospel message of salvation through repentance, water baptism in Jesus’ name, and infilling of the Holy Ghost evidenced by speaking with other tongues has changed the lives of countless millions.

The Bible is exceptionally authentic and uniquely self-consistent. The Truth of the Bible is obvious to anyone willing to reasonably investigate it.
